Certification is the highest recognition that can be obtained in the field of Human Resources. It symbolizes professional achievement beyond education and/or experience. The Professional in Human Resources (PHR) or the Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) certification signifies the mastery of the HR body of knowledge. To be eligible for either the PHR or SPHR certification exams, candidates must have 2 years employment experience in an exempt-level position in the HR field.
To assist members in preparing for the exam, AHRM encourages participation in the HRCI Study Group Pool so you can connect with other members who need a ‘study buddy’ for the exam. Two testing windows, each eight weeks in duration, are offered annually. Candidates who register for the Spring testing window can schedule their exam at a Prometric testing center between May 1 and June 30. Candidates who register for the Winter testing window can schedule their exam between November 15, 2004 and January 15, 2005. Certification exam application deadlines are as follows:

Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible to take either exam, candidates must demonstrate that:
You have at least 2 years of Human Resource Experience
At least 51 percent of daily activities are within the human resource function; and
Those activities are at the exempt (professional) level (described below).
The exams reflect today's HR practices. Although two years of exempt-level (professional) HR work experience need not be current or sequential, more recent experience is more likely to coincide with the exam's content.
Eligibility is determined by the information found in the work experience section of the application and, if necessary, on the completed supporting documentation form and any accompanying documentation. If a candidate is found ineligible, there is no appeal process. It is in a candidate's best interest to ensure that supporting documentation clearly demonstrates two years of exempt-level (professional) HR work experience.
